Across the Peak District, especially in areas rich in millstone grit a coarse-grained sandstone  many old millstones can still be found scattered across the hillsides, forests, and valley edges. These relics tell the story of a once-thriving local industry that shaped both the landscape and the communities around it.

Most of these stones date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when they were crafted for the milling of flour, for industrial machinery, or used as grindstones for sharpening tools. The Derbyshire part of the Peak District was one of England’s main centres of millstone production, thanks to the exceptional quality of its sandstone.

As industrial technology evolved and demand shifted with the pursuit of finer, whiter flour and the introduction of new composite materials  the traditional craft of millstone making began to decline. Many unfinished stones were left behind at quarry sites or abandoned in the woods, where they remain today as silent witnesses to the region’s industrial past.
